I don't know about you guys, but when I think of trash cans, I don't typically think of designer style and exorbitant prices. But apparently, in San Francisco, they are rolling out some new trash cans that are causing quite a stir. And when I say "stir," I mean people are straight up laughing at them.
Behold, the $20,000 trash can

Yes, you read that right. San Francisco is spending $20,000 on each of these new trash cans that are supposed to be "designer-style." Honestly, I have no idea what kind of designer would come up with a trash can that looks like this. It looks like a giant egg. Or maybe a modern art sculpture. Definitely not a trash can.
But wait, it gets better. According to reports, these trash cans are "smart." That means they have sensors that tell the city when they're full and need to be emptied. Oh, and they're also solar-powered. Because apparently, regular old trash cans just aren't good enough anymore.
World's most expensive trash cans

But don't worry, San Francisco isn't the only city blowing crazy amounts of money on trash cans. According to recent reports, there are actually trash cans out there that are even more expensive than these "designer-style" ones.
One company is selling a trash can for $4,000. Yes, you read that right. FOUR THOUSAND DOLLARS. What kind of madness is this? I mean, I get that some people are into fancy things, but come on. It's a trash can. Its sole purpose in life is to hold garbage. Why do we need to spend thousands of dollars on it?
But why, though?
Okay, I get that these new trash cans are supposed to be "smart" and all, but do we really need them? Is the old system of having workers manually empty the trash cans really that inefficient? And even if it is, is it really worth spending tens of thousands of dollars on fancy new trash cans?
I don't know, man. Maybe I'm just not fancy enough to appreciate the beauty of a $20,000 egg-shaped trash can. But I feel like there are much better things we could be spending our money on. Like, I don't know, maybe funding public schools or improving our roads or something?
But hey, what do I know? I'm just a person who thinks trash cans should be functional and affordable. What do you think of these new "designer-style" trash cans? Are they worth the price tag or just another example of wasteful spending? Let me know in the comments!
